During this project I have been given the opportunities to leave about where my family comes from, the good and the bad. I never knew or had interest in knowing about my family back ground until entering EFP 12, I knew that I had some sort of Indigenous in me but knew little to nothing about it. This project made it possible for me to talk to my mom and grandma about my family history which I had known was always a touchy subject. What I had found out shocked me in a way they. They told me I was Metis and my family comes from Saskatchewan, this was odd to me because from what I knew about my late grandfather is that, if we were to talk about being Indigenous it would greatly upset him but I never knew why. My Grandma then told me about how both of his parents passed when he was very you and he was raise by his grandmother (my great grandmother) who attended residential school in the 1950s in Saskatchewan, she was told that being what she was (Metis) was dirty and was stripped of all of her culture before even getting to know it. My grandma told me that mt grandpa acted this way because it was drilled into him from his grandmother that they were "half-breeds" and "dirty" and to not mention even having Metis in him she told him to say that he was anything else. well learning about my family history I also learned many thigs outside of it, I learned that First Nations people were here long before the Europeans, and that the Europeans would trick the Metis into believing that they wanted to live in harmony, no wars or fighting. This turned out to be very untrue, the Europeans took everything that the first nations people had built and created, leaving them with nothing.
one thing that really stood out to me was Lisa teaching me about the Metis culture and how Metis people are known as the products of affairs. This project has given me the chance to learn about something that I never knew I had any Interest in, I enjoyed getting to learn a small part of my culture and I will now continue to further my knowledge in the topic of reconciliation in the Metis culture.
